    A Letter to Nightbirde

    Dear Jane,

Pain. If there is a faster path to heaven, let me know when you find it. For now, I suppose that we’re on it together.

Four years ago I found myself on America’s Got Talent, my dad was dying of cancer, and I felt like giving up on a lot more than just the show. The pain was the only thing that outweighed the fear. It hurt so badly to watch him fight so hard, just to see him lose a little more each day. It was enough to make even the biggest stage in the world feel meaningless. I can’t congratulate you enough for having pushed so far.

I think we both know that all of this is so much more than a talent show. The music is so much more than the hits. The pain is so much more than a story.  There’s a grand purpose to so much pain, and my dad knew it. He always told me, “men are that they might have joy.” In other words, “You can’t wait until life isn’t hard anymore before you decide to be happy.”

So, we sing on TV. We sing to ourselves. We sing to God, and know that He hears through the off-notes, and the sloppy prose. I couldn’t help but smile at “It’s OK”. It brought me face to face with my 13 year old self, writing “Okay Day”. Although I hadn’t had an okay day in a long time, I knew that if I sang it anyways it might just come true. My dad taught me that. He was right.

I hope that this letter finds you well. I hope that everyone can find as much strength in your story as I do. You’re never alone.

    -Evie Clair

Evie Clair Raises Funds for Arts at Hometown School

Evie Clair played a benefit concert for the performing arts department at a school near her home on Saturday. The American Leadership Academy – Ironwood campus in Queen Creek, Arizona gave her a warm welcome as she performed with her siblings for a dynamic concert of lively and heartfelt covers and originals. Supporting music in schools is close to Evie’s heart as her mother was a high school music teacher for many years. Evie shared with a sold out audience, the story of her journey over the past year dealing with her father’s death while being in the spotlight of America’s Got Talent. She will be traveling for performances for most of March but was thankful to be at home for a little while.  She said this concert was her favorite because she could feel her dad there with her so strongly. She broke down crying during her song Okay Day and her supportive sister, Kirra who also accompanied her on drums, helped her through it along with fans who held up lights from their cell phones.

    Finals

Evie Clair’s epic adventures on America’s Got Talent Season 12 have come to an end. She made amazing friends, inspired many, held to what she believes, said goodbye to her daddy and made some difficult decisions. One was to continue when her heart was broken.

For the finals she sang her dad’s song “What a Wonderful World.” Her dad wasn’t a singer but he did sing this song on demand and belted it in a Lois Armstrong growel for laughs.

No one was laughing during her performance. Everything was silent, almost reverent in the center of a raucous Hollywood Blvd. She sang an understated version holding back tears with everything in her.

Simon and AGT producers and staffers checked on her throughout the night to make sure they weren’t putting too much pressure on her. She never felt pressure but made the decision herself to get back on a plane to LA the very day after her father’s funeral. She knew he would want her to be there to continue. This time he would be there in spirit with new abilities to strengthen her.

The live results finale was the day after the finals and Evie was feeling more confident.

On the results show Evie was so happy to be able to sing her original song “Okay Day.” She hasn’t been able to release it yet but was stunned when producers said they wanted her to sing it with James Arthur who is currently on the Billboard Hot 100 for his song “Say You Won’t Let Go.”

Evie sang a verse and chorus of the upbeat song with perfect confidence then introduced James Arthur who came in on the bridge.

The bridge of this song is so special to Evie because it came to her in a dream a few months ago. She said she was standing in a circle of fire and rain came down and put it out. In the dream she heard herself singing…

“When the clouds start to form

    And the rain starts to fall;

    Everyone knows after rain

    Comes a rainbow after all.”

She woke up and gathered her sister Kirra and brother Porter to help her finish writing the song.

The AGT producers heard the song on a home video and loved it so they sent it in for approval for the final show.

Evie didn’t win America’s Got Talent but is so happy for her good friend, Darci, who did. Just being in the top 10 of the greatest talent show on earth is more than she could have ever dreamed and she plans to keep moving forward.
